Maximum number of mailMerge fields in doc

    W97
    Hi all

I had a user ask me whats the maximum amount of mailMerge fields that can be inserted into a word document.
She mentioned that previously when she inserting about approx 50 -80 actual fields - Word displayed a message about the amount of fields.(I dont know what version of word she was working in at the time).

Has anyone come across this before or know anything about this?
    Thanks Diana

Re: Maximum number of mailMerge fields in doc

Word 97's limitations are discussed in MS's Knowledge Base article Q168804.

Re: 32,000 maximum number of fields in doc?

In the MS-article link it mentioned you can have

Number of fields per document 32,000

    How accurate is this info?
I know its microsoft, however I also had an initial query regarding undos.
Microsoft stated that the maximum was 100 & I clocked way over 30,0000.
Has anyone created a doc with a great many fields & ever encounter any problems with field size etc.

Re: 32,000 maximum number of fields in doc?

I've never documented an exact number, and never bombed out because of excess field codes. However, I have seen several documents (sorry in either 95 or 2K... we skipped 97) using numerous (thousands?) sequence codes, tc codes, cross-reference codes, and typical document automation codes successfully. I do know that the table parameters are accurate with respect to physical size and maximum columns (I had to test it for someone who was extremely resistent to using a spreadsheet). And I can tell you that the limitations on nested codes should probably be followed pretty carefully.

I believe there is a limit of (about) 128 merge fields in a data source though.

If it is a Word data source the limit is 63 fields for Word 97. In previous versions the limit was 31. This is due to the limit in the number of columns a table rather than a mail merge limitation.

If your data source is in Access or Excel then the limit is 255 fields, a text data source is limited to 256.

The maximum number of fields a document can hold, 32,000 is pretty accurate since past version have also had this same limit.

However as of Word 97 the limit of Undo actions is 32MB, the max size of a document (file size from graphics not included).

The size of course would also be limited by available resources.
