Clearing Word Save List

How can I clear the Word2000 Save List which appears as a drop down list in the dialogue box.

Re: Clearing Word Save List

If you want to never see it, go to Tools/Options/General then set the Recently used file list to 0 entries. Click OK and close Word.
If you just want to clear the current entries, do the same but then re-open Word and set the number back to how ever many entires you want, up to 9 maximum. It won't remember the ones that were there before, but it will gradually re-populate the list as you use files.

I'm using Word 2000, but I think this is the same in any version.

Thanks Ian, but perhaps I have not outlined my problem properly. The list that I am trying to clear appears on the following actions:
File > Save > Click on the drop down arrow on the right of the File Name Box at the bottom of the Dialogue Box, and a list of files appears that I cannot clear.

Mike,

That list is most likely stored in the Registry, and there's likely no direct way to change it, short of a Registry tweak (I wouldn't know where to find that one....).

Re: Clearing Word Save List

It doesn't seem to be stored in the Registry. Some MS applications like Excel or Powerpoint seem to store a recent file list in the registry, but not Word. (In any case I suspect that is the files listed on the File menu in the application.) I can find no reference to the files concerned in the registry.

There is a 'Recent' folder which will presumably vary with the version of Windows - mine is at

WindowsProfiles[my name]Applcation dataMicrosoftOfficeRecent

with a lot of shortcuts in it but removing a shortcut from there which points to a document on the list in the Save As dialog seems to have no effect, even with a restart. Still mystified!

'Scuse my curiosity, but why do you want to clear this list? Is it causing a problem?

Not really a problem Beryl (whats new ######cat), but I am an IT teacher and have been posed this problem by a student. I hate not being able to solve a problem. It must be stored somewhere, I have searched the Registry to no avail.

It must be a Windows thing, because the same occurs in Excel and Paint at least.

Re: Clearing Word Save List

It is stored in the registry, but as it's in a binary value it's rather difficult to find!
If you run regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonO pen FindMicrosoft WordSettingsSave AsFile Name MRU
You'll see two binary values Maximum entries and Value. Double click on the latter and you'll see a 'translation' beside the hex in the edit box. I've just tried setting the former to 0 and clearing the latter, and it seems to do the trick. But back up the registry, make a system restore point, check your life insurance and clean underwerar BEFORE meddling with the Registry

Hi Tim
I shall try this, although I am a little dubious of the Registry.
