Headings and Page Breaks (Word 97 SR2)

On occassion, I find it necessary to insert a page break before a second or third level heading (spacing, readability, etc.) When I do this, the page break takes on the formatting of the heading, leaving me with a unwanted entry in the table of contents. The only way I have found to get around this is to put an empty paragraph before the heading and format it as body text. Then the page break takes on its formatting and I do not have the extra element in my table of contents. This seems like a rather kluge way to have to do this. Is there something I am missing here? There must be a better way to do this. Any insight that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Ron,

How about creating another heading style ("Heading 2 w/ Page Break") and setting the Page Break Before property?

    HTH,

    Chris

If you are only occasionally needing to put a page break before a second or third level heading, then don't use a page break per se, but rather, go to Format > Paragraphs > Line and Page Breaks tab, and put a checkmark next to "Page break before" - this will give you all the benefits of a page break, but with none of the disadvantages.

If you need to do this more than occasionally, then take Chris' advice and create a separate style for this purpose.

Thanks Chris and Gary.. I really only need to do it occasionally and hope to be able to avoid having two sorts of styles around, one with page breaks and one without. Looks like Gary's suggestion is what I am looking for.
