Screen shots in posts

Hi:

How do I put a screen shot into a post? I can copy it to the clipboard, but I don't know what to do then.

Also, does that make the post use too much bandwidth?

Thanks, as always.

Paste it into a graphics program. Chop out just the bit you really need. Reduce the colors to the minumum you can get away with. Shrink it to the smallest inteligible size. Save it as a gif. Upload it as an attachment.

Phil - did you check out Hardcopy under Software?
(I gotta plug my own suggestions )

Thanks, Eileen. Lief, I can take the screen shot. I just don't know what to do with it while I'm typing a message in WOPR.

I'm trying to do what you did in your Hardcopy message. I can upload an attachment. I just don't know what to put in the message to make it show.

Re: Screen shots in posts

Type in your message and click Preview/Attach a File
This will take you to this screen:

Do not press preview again or you will lose the attachment and need to re-attach it.

(BTW - the above is an image inserted using the button - this needs the graphic to be published somewhere and the URL is inserted inside [ image ] URL [ /image ] tags.)

Does that make sense?

Sorry - I may have missed out what you are actually asking:
In Hardcopy - select Save AS - if you have the registered version you can save it in (the preferred, smaller) .gif version. In my case, I simply saved it as "c:x.gif".
Once it's uploaded as an attachment, you can delete it locally as it is now on the WOPR server, in this instance "http://www.wopr.com/w3tfiles/23-12357-x.gif"

You don't need to put anything in the message to make it show. It is 'inlined' automatically if it's a graphic.

Re: Screen shots in posts

That's what I don't know how to do! You put a picture in your post. Where did you get the URL? You also put a picture of a single button in your post?

Suppose I want to put that same button picture in a post. I take a screen shot. I paste it in, say Word. (I notice that I can't just paste it from the clipboard into a post). If I attach the file, it shows up as an attachment, but it doesn't appear as a picture in the post. That's what I'm trying to do & there's some steps that I'm missing.

Thanks.

Re: Screen shots in posts

OK - easiest way is to right-mouse the picture in question - select properties and this shows the URL. Select the url and Cntrl_Ins to copy. Click the button and you get [ image] url [ /image ].
Replace 'url' with the copied url.
Does that make sense?

Re: Screen shots in posts

Hi Leif:

Not exactly. I did a test & posted the little icon from your post by pressing the button & then typing:
"htttp://www.wopr.com/w3timages/graphic1.gif" inside the (graphic)URL(/graphic).
(I misspelled it above so it doesn't come out as a hyperlink.) I can get the URL from by right clicking a picture & choosing "copy link location". When I right click, there is no properties choice. I don't know where the grey box you had in your post came from. Is that in a file you've saved to your hard drive--or is it somewhere here in the lounge?

If I attach a file to a post, is the link then local on the lounge? Thanks again.

Re: Screen shots in posts

OK - we're getting there.
I'm on W2K and IE5.5 so maybe I get different right_click bits.
The 'grey box' was a file saved on my HD, but is now on the WOPR site.

I used Hardcopy to grab the bit of screen shot in my previous post and saved it as "c:x.gif"
Then in preview, I typed in "c:x.gif" in the attachment box (see post 12357 above) and it was uploaded and is now saved on the WOPR site.
In that same post, there are two graphic images. The top one is inserted as an image and required a URL to an image that was already published on the internet.
The second was attached.

Clear as mud now ?

Re: Screen shots in posts

OK. Think I've got it. Tried it in the test lounge. I may eventually get HardCopy, but there are a couple of other capture programs I may try. I've tried ScreenSeize & WinGrab, but I think there's another called Capture or something like it.

Thanks for all the help.

I like ALT+PRTSCN myself.. simple, effective, less resource hungry...

Re: Screen shots in posts

But Alt+PrintScrn saves it as a bitmap, doesn't it. I thought that was larger than a .gif--or do I have it wrong?
