    Common Dialogs (Word 97SR2)

Who has some experience with the Windows Common Dialogs as replacements for Word's built-in dialogs?

I'm going to rid the Word 97 world of the Word Open Dialog by writing a "really useful" open dialog (to me even the Places Bar of 200X) is not good enough.

Before embarking on a journey to create a completely customized Open dialog, I was wondering if anyone has used the Common dialogs and knows just how much customization they allow. Can I, for instance, put my own controls on the dialog? My vision includes combo boxes, list boxes as well as a few command buttons. Can I do all that with Common dialogs or should I just start with a userform and build everything?

Very little customization; definitely no controls, just stuff like initializing the read-only checkbox to read-only. --Sam

    Kevin,

The Windows Common Dialogs are just calls into the API. About the only "tweaking" allowed is in things like telling it what file type to default to, setting the initial directory, and setting a few of the captions. If you want anything fancier, you would have to write your own custom control that includes the common dialog functionality.

I have no experience with the Windows Common Dialogs as replacements for Word's built-in dialogs!

That said, I have written a few GUIs which you are welcome to inspect/clone.

My Files Processor allows the user to drill-down directories & extents as per the usual FileOpen type, but includes the facility for filtering files outside a size range, outside a date range, sampling only 1/n files either serially or randomly etc. These seem to me to be useful things in dealing with collections of files.

On top of that I've dabbled in dynamic GUIs, and don't see why one shouldn't have a GUI with a button that expands into a second GUI that allows the user (which would be the developer) to modify the structure of the basic GUI. I can add fields and calculate the new size of the form based on the original size and the added fields, permite run-time squeezing/stretching listboxes to accommodate data etc.

    Let me know.

Ok, thanks to all. I do think, though, that you can add buttons to the common dialogs. I read that somewhere. But it sounds like for my needs they are not the answer.

    Kevin,
You can, I believe, add controls to the common dialogs but it involves designing dialog templates in Visual C++ and then hooking them into the main dialog. Rather you than me..... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Thank, Rory, I'll humbly bow out. Exit stage left.
