Reinstalled Windows - how access old PST?? (9.0.0.2711)

    ARGGHH!HH!

Due to an experience involving the laws of gravity, my Thinkpad's disk has been replaced. (Don't ask.) Fine; Windows was reinstalled, and all the data copied over to the new disk just fine, and now I have 20GB of disk space instead of 4.5GB.

But golllllllly, I can *open* my old PST file (all 300GB of it) but I can't make it be "the" PST file. There must be some way to do this, isn't there??

I also can't get at the old Accounts settings and options and all that, and I'll be darned if I can find any useful info in help. So I thought I'd look in HERE, where there's ALWAYS useful info.

    Help???

    What OS are you using?

Where did you place the PST file that copied to your machine?

What messages do you get when you try to open it?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

As my message said, I can open it just fine. But (as I also said<g>), since it's not "the" PST file (the one that shows up as Outlook's "Personal Folders"), I don't have all my old account settings, address book, and options.

account settings were saved in the registry, only mail and other outlook items are in the pst. unless you exported them, you'll need ot recreate them.

address book is contacts normally. right click on the contactsfolder and choose properties. add a check to the outlook address book tab.

Let me guess (since Help doesn't seem to say)... all my Organize rules are gone too, right? Is there ANY way to port those from one Windows installation to another?

do you have access to the old install? if so, acct settings are stored more or less here (exact path varies with OS)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionWindows Messaging Subsystem

rules are stored in *.RWZ and can be retrieved from an old install to - they are under documents and settings. however, if anything changed (pst name, location etc) they may need repointed to the right folders.

This does not apply to ol2002, they are now stored in the pst.

    Thanks, MJ - you're a champ, always.

I have the old registry (the whole old Windows folder), but I don't know how to open it with regedit. Is there a way?

In fact, it would be lovely if there were a way to export an app's info from the registry, wouldn't it. But there's not, is there?

There are other settings you might want to get while you're after the .rwz file. The same folder might have .fav (favorites), .nick (nicknames for name resolution) and .rtf, .htm or .txt (for signatures). You might also find an Outcmd.dat file. That might not be safe to bring across, so if you do you'll want to back up the existing one first.

You'd have to be able to start the old installation in order to export registry settings.

    Uh, the what??

Pardon my ignorance... (By now I've muddled through the hard way, except that I haven't yet reconstructed my Rules ... but for 'next time' (yuck), it would be good to know.)

    .rwz = Rules wizard files.

    You'll find a list of the others linked from <!post=Post 74742, 74742>Post 74742<!/post>.

    DUDE!! Most excellent!

Man, I don't know how I would have found that... I was not thinking in terms of restoring. Thanks. I wonder why the article doesn't mention the RWZ files!

    Dave

p.s. Even if I had found it, I would have been thrown off by this at the start of the OL2000 article, which says it wouldn't have applied to me: "NOTE : These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option."

Ah, the corresponding KB article for OL2000 (Internet Mail Only) is Q196492.

    My rules are back! Yay!

    Thanks -
    Dave
