IE6 won't install (Win Me IE 5.5)

I'm unable to complete an install of IE6.0.

I've downloaded from WIndows Update site, and I've tried a copy from a magazine disk, but both give me incomplete installs.

I get an error saying "Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running setup again.". The help file tells me ...

"It appears you have the correct setup files, but the installation failed. Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If that still does not work, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for additional help."

I've done this a dozen times, using both options, resume, and new install, with all progs cancelled, but no success.

The MS KB seems to recognize a problem Q 221863 (among others), but no solutions seem to work .

I'm running Norton Systems Utilities Pro 2001, but I've tried without any of its progs running and it still fails. I've had a look through the archive here and it seems others have had a problem but no definitive solution.

    Any suggestions.

    Please, before I go mad!!!!

If you are using Windows ME (or Windows 95/98), it is NOT recommended to upgrade to IE 6. Continue to use IE 5.5 SR2 with Q316059 Update.

I'm using WinME and haven't had any problems with IE 6.0 ...why would you say it is not recommended to upgrade to IE 6?

Re: IE6 won't install (Win Me IE 5.5)

I run all my Win98SE machines with IE6 and I have no problems. Certain machines had specific problems, but the average user can use IE6 with Win9x.

It looks to me as if a "TSR" (Terminate and Stay Resident) program is interfering with your installation. There is a program called "End It All" from PC Mag that will shut down everything for you in one click -- but I think you have to be a member of ZDNet to get that...

You need to manually shut down EVERY running process except "Explorer" -- and then try to re-install IE6. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and End Task as many times as necessry to shut down everything except Explorer. {If someone comes in here and says you need to keep Systray as well, don't believe them! } Once all the running proceses are shut down, you should be able to complete the install of IE6.

Eh, you are right -- but I like to see the linear stair-step view of the forum, so I frequently screw up and reply to the last poster. I find it less visually disturbing!! Cheers.

I had what sounds like exactly the same problem (and went just as nuts as you) <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15> . In the end I left it for a week, and then on advice went to the IE6setup.exe file I had previously downloaded. On executing it, you get three options. I went for a full re-install. Setup very quickly worked out that I was 90% of the way there, and did the rest in very short order.

    Logic?? Naaah!

    I Hope this helps!

I've been trying it every day now for 4 days without success.

    I'll keep trying

    Thanks

I've downloaded EndItAll and tried it without luck.

I'd already tried closing every process except Systray (I thought you did need to keep it running). That didn't work either.

Just spotted that it always crashes at 77% complete.

    Does this give any hints?

Re: IE6 won't install (Win Me IE 5.5)

Well... you followed Microsoft's advice -- you closed all running program (except for the completely unnecessary systray) and there was nothing interfering with the installation. So, their advice was wrong. ;(

Sounds like a tough problem. Have you tried to contact Microsoft?

Beyond that, I am not sure what to do. Is there anyway you can tell what part of IE is being installed when it fails? The 77% doesn't tell me anything, but is there any information on what was being installed as it failed? Also, are you installing this from the Internet, or have you downloaded the entire installation files to your disk? (Wait, I just saw that you use a CD disk as well. Well, that's not it...) Re: IE6 won't install (Win Me IE 5.5)

    I think I've tried all.

I've searched quite a bit and it all seems to refer to running programs in the background, and in particular norton. But no definitive answers other than MS's own one, which didn't work.

What is the exact reference to Norton? If we could figure out what is supposedly interfering, perhaps we could zap it another way...

Do you have any Process Viewers installed? My favorite is Process Explorer from Sysinternals.

Re: IE6 won't install (Win Me IE 5.5)

There's no specific reference that I can find to Norton. Other sites even refer to McAfee. Norton's own site doesn't show anything that I can find, although I do get about 1,000 results, so its really impossible to check them out.

What is clear is that there are many many references to a problem on the www, but little in the way of solutions.

I haven't tried any process viewers, but I'll try anything.
