Count The Number Of Times A Character Is Present (2000)

This should be an easy one, but this early I have gridlock of the brain: I want look up a column and count the number of times an Alpha character appears. For example, I have a column that contains, randomly, only "Y"s and "N"s. I want a function in, say, the last cell of a column to count the number of times the letter "N" appears in the column and enter that figure in that last cell.
    Any takers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    You could use
    =COUNTIF(A1:A6;"N")

    Hi Jeff,

    Try something like
Countif("a1:a50","N"), where a1 to a50 is the range containing the Ys and Ns.
