    word95 compatible (all)

As I recall, there was a Document format change between Word6 and Word95. word95 compatible

To the best of my understanding, Word95 and onwards formats are fully compatible. That is, If I opened a WordPerfect5.1 document in Word95 and saved it in Word format, that saved document would be fully comprehensible to the latest Word out of Office XP; likewise, if I opened and saved in WordXP, that saved document would be comprehensible to Word95.

Comments are welcome, especially from those who have tried this sort of thing.

The bottom line is this: If one is converting a slew of WordPerfect documents for a client, need the client be concerned that, say, I am am running the conversion in Word97 (or Word95) and client has the latest whizz-bang version of Office?

Need the client be concerned if I am running the conversion in Office XP and client is still using Word97?

I'm talking here only of converting WordPerfect 5.x documents; this isn't an issue of whether MasterDocuments are working yet in office XP - WordPerfect doesn't have MasterDocuments.

    Hi Chris,

Looking at the date stamp of the WordPerfect converter on my machine (WPFT5.cnv) shows "05/08/95", so it seems the converter hasn't changed for a while. If there is no new converter for XP, it seems impossible that new features of WordXP/Word2000 are used, which would mean the files are backward compatible with Word97.

    Thanks, Klaus.

You, like others, are applying brains and logice at a time when I seem to be unable to do that!

I was at an Officexp site and we installed the WP converters Tuesday. Ran into a problem and I'm still tracking down whether it's a corrupt WP51 file, or whether the converters are different. I'll take a look at date-stamps next time I'm there.

As a matter of fact, though, WordPerfect originated the concept of Master Documents and Sub Documents back in about 1989 (WP 5.1), when Word was still in diapers. The WordPerfect Master Document feature was not frequently used, though in my testing it performed fairly well and it is included in WordPerfect 9 and 10 (the latest). WordPerfect remains the superior document processing program, though Word has bludgeoned it out of the market.

As with so many features and applications -- Microsoft copied Master Documents poorly and claimed it as their own.

As far as your conversion problems go -- the corruption is most often created by Word during conversion from WordPerfect. Note that Microsoft has not bothered to update the conversion filters, nor release any new ones -- in my opinion preferring to have users believe that Word Perfect is the problem when it is not. It makes no difference, the Emperor is still naked.
