    Inconsistent Result using Startup Template

We are currently trying to add an item to the File drop down menu in Word 97 SR2 (Print and ID). We have added the Print and ID item to a template and placed it in the startup menu. One user can see the Print and ID item when she opens a blank document. A second user with exact same normal.dot and startup templates does not see the Print and ID item, however, if second user opens the template in the startup menu, she can see it there. Any ideas on why this is happening or where I can look to try to troubleshoot this?

Are you sure that you have the right Startup folder? Check under Tools | Options | File Locations on user 2's computer. There can be multiple folders on a computer labelled "Startup" and the Word setting can be changed by the user (or an inept add-in). For more on global templates see url]http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm</A>.

    Hope this helps.

Both users point to the correct Startup folder. It appears to depend on some kind of pecking order or "pole" position for lack of a better term that the templates in the startup folder are being read. We had to remove everything from the startup folder except the pertinent template. At that point it read only that template and once it saw the item on the File Menu, then we could add the other templates back into the startup folder and it retained the File Menu item. I have to roll this change out to 500 users so am still looking to find how or where this pecking order is stored by Word.

When you find out, please let me know! You can get a start on my website with the templates page. That has everything I know about the pecking order.

You may want to check with the microsoft news group http://news://msnews.microsoft.com/microso...n.menustoolbars. See http://www.addbalance.com/word/netiquette.htm for posting guidelines.

Clicking on the news link should open your default news application (probably Outlook Express) and take you to the newsgroup. You would want to "subscribe" to the newsgroup so that you'll be able to easily check back there for answers. Unlink this board, you won't get an e-mail to let you know when someone does answer. Usually, you will have one or more good answers within a day.

That said, I've usually had best results if I do all modifications to a template with the template open and not checked on the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box. I uncheck all other Add-Ins.

This means I do this when building toolbars, recording/editing macros, keyboard shortcuts, and AutoText. If I'm still having problems, I'll rename my Normal.dot, too! This gives me a clean working environment. If I make any modifications to the built-in menus or toolbars, those modifications are first created / done on a custom toolbar (which may never be used) which holds the customizations. Then these are copied to the built-in menus.

Finally, on my templates page (http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) is a link to an Add-In for an Organizer for keyboard shortcuts. This works like the Organizer but lets you view and copy keyboard shortcuts that may be in a particular template/document.

Good luck! ...and remember, if you do discover how that pecking order works, please let me know![img]/w3timages/icons/grin.gif[/img]

Try pasting the following into your browser address window:
    news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.publ...n.menustoolbars

That should open up your news reader!

The URL tags here apparently add an http:// automatically if one isn't typed (or wanted).[img]/w3timages/icons/clown.gif[/img]

We never were able to find the pecking order but we accomplished this with the next best thing. We already knew that the toolbars in Word disappear if you add buttons to the Standard or Formatting toolbars so we created our own toolbars, reset the Microsoft toolbars unchecked them and applied our own DW Standard and DW Formatting toolbars and now we do not lose the toolbars anymore. The same is true for the Menus. We decided to resolve this issue by removing the Microsoft File menu and creating a new File menu with our additions to it and that works. We are getting the same result on every user's machine.
