    Hebrew Word (Office XP)

    Hi!

I write a quarterly column on computer issues of Jewish interest for Jewish Action Magazine. An author in New York called me about upgrading his bilingual wordprocessing capability. He has been using an old version of Hebrew Word, which required Hebrew Windows as the OS.

For years, I shied away from using an OS whose support was not based here in the US, so I gained no familiarity with Hebrew Windows. Does anyone know if there was a Hebrew update of Word with either Office 2000 or Office XP? If the answer is affirmative, will these newer versions work with the standard OS, or are they still linked to a non-standard OS like Hebrew Windows? Because I am a reviewer, I usually get a quick response to my questions through Windows PR people at Wag-Ed. On this issue, I have gotten literally no response at all, after several inquiries, which leads me to believe that no one there knows the answer.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Rabbi:

    From this article:

"Windows XP and Windows 2000 have built-in support for most languages, including Arabic and Hebrew. To configure the operating system to type in the appropriate language, you must configure the keyboard to type in that language. If the keyboard that you want is not listed by default, you may need to install additional files."

So, no language specific Windows is required. And Office XP is available in Hebrew.

    Kevin,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I remember when the foreign language enhancements appeared for Office 2000. I did look at them, and they were very limited. They certainly did not amount to a fully supercharged bilingual wordprocessor. I believe they functioned on the level of being able to send a Word document to someone else on your network with a line of Hebrew instructions. Wag-Ed (still talking to me back then) confirmed that the Hebrew enhancements were not meant to replace a Hebrew wordprocessor. Hebrew Windows, OTOH, was just that - but required the Heb Win OS.

    Rabbi,

I can't help you on this- apologies.

There is an older thread (over a year ago) with some issues related to Hebrew Word processing (though unrelated to yours). Perhaps just having a contact might help?

    The thread is on http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.p...ew=&sb=&o=&vc=1
