    ISO Images (Windows XP Pro)

Without having to use windows xp powertoys, how do I deal with a file that has an ".iso" extension? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    define "deal"

you can open/extract it with winimage http://www.winimage.com

for burning to cd, EZCD (among others) can burn it.

and there are virtual cd drivers so you can mount it right from your hard drive. sorry, i don't have a program name or url to suggest.

As a follow on to Mary's suggestion....

http://www.isobuster.com is a good, free tool for exploring the ISO files.

If you want to make a CD from an ISO image, I would highly recommend FireBurner as a quick, accurate and simple means of toasting ISO's into a useable CD.

Mary and Mark -- thanks for your suggestions on what to do with files I have with the .iso extension.

I have a follow-up question: what do I do once the image is burned to a cd? As you can tell, I've never heard of iso images, nor have I ever dealt with them. I'm pretty much clueless, as a matter of fact!

    Please advise. Thanks!

if you burn it correctly, nothing <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> just pop the cd in and install. You want to use an iso-aware program, not just write the iso to the cd as one big file.

think of an iso like a zip file - a collection of files packaged to keep them together. EZCD, winimage or other programs will "unzip" it and write the files to the cd as individual files, so you can use them.

    Thanks for the advice, MaryJ.

I actually was able to use Nero (their latest version) to burn the iso to a cd. The only problem is is that I had to "finalize" the cd, or close the session. Do the other programs require that I close the disk from further burning?

yes, most programs do require you to close the cd. If they aren't closed they won't work in other cd drives. As cheap as CDs have been the past year, I dont mind closing a cd with just a few megs on it.
