    Multiple self-includes, pages destroyed (FP2002)

    What causes FP to display several overlapping includes of a page?

    On win98, i copy a site from zip drive to web folders. Open FP on a page: it shows all borders. The page "space" includes an additional copy of the borders and the page, and inside that is another copy of the page + borders. Close THAT! Reopen site, borders exist, page content gone.

    Fix that page, work for "a while", generate a new page that is included content. Change to nav view, drag the new page into position. Double click on the parent page, it opens in page view with the multiple includes as described above. Switch to HTML View: a series of <body> tags followed by <body></body> but NO content <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> Preview view shows the multiple includes. Close the page, lose the content.

    Is FP just unstable, or should I blame win98, or perhaps i shouldve 'saved' more often...

    More info: FP gratuitously inserts <body> tags ! So a page in HTML view winds up looking like
    <pre>// header stuff
    <body etc.> // this one is okay
    <body>
    <body>
    <body>
    ...page content
    </body>
    ... other closures
    </pre>

    The additional <body> tags tell FP to include the page content multiple times.

    I'm still tryna figure out the proximate cause.

    Even more...

    FP inserts the additional <body> tags upon opening a page. It looks like the site is corrupt...

    Hi Leif -

    No, nothing there that is applicable.

    i believe there are two issues that FP can't deal with:
    1. I imported this web from the net. Dividing the web into folders causes problems. FP loses track of the folders, and attempting to apply global changes to the web only work on the "open folders", if those.
    2. Shared borders is the immediate problem. I deleted all formatting, and all shared borders (a folder at a time - talk about tedious! - and I saw no way to do the job with a macro). FP nonetheless retains the meta tag about Microsoft Border, and inserts two additional <body> tags describing the background to be applied. When those are removed manually in HTML view, the pages seem to work correctly. Given issue 1, however, i will trash the site, and work from another copy that will soon be available (which doesn't use folders).

    What is weird is that i have a couple other webs divided into folders, and they work fine. I.e., folders, not subwebs. I am convinced that Folders are THE way to organize a web, since the folder structure can be formed to match the basic tree of a web.

    One other question: HOW do I get to the KB? Via MSDN?

    After some experimentation, I determine that 2 levels of folders are the most FP can handle.
