Display Settings Icon (XP Pro Version 5.1.2600 Build 2600)

I miss not having the display settings icon available on the task bar as was available in 95, 98,ME, etc. (Display Properties/Settings tab/Advanced/Show Settings Icon on the task bar "check box") I've looked everywhere in XP (and 2000 as well) but no luck. Haven't found any keystrokes for it either. Did I miss it somewhere or, if not, does anyone know of a utility or another shortcut that can provide this function for me? I switch between resolutions a lot depending on the various web site layouts and the type of work I'm doing. Never realize how much until I'm now without it.
    Thanks Very Much,
    Bill

Right-click anywhere on your Desktop and from pop-up menu choose Properties.

Thanks anyway kaplinb, but I'm talking about the previously available (98,ME) taskbar icon that shows the settings in one click only. If you are working in a window other than the desktop, it would take four clicks to access the settings menu in the "standard" method that you described.

I hate to break it to you, but that icon was either a function of your video card software or a power toy. I was not a feature native to Windows.

The sad news is that little icon that became a default option in Windows 98 does not appear in Win2000 or XP. You may be able to add it via the old Power Toys collection - its name was QuickRes - but I haven't experimented to see if it works onder 2000/XP. It does, however, work under NT, if you find the appropriate version - so I don't think that it will.

Your best bet is to find a third party utility that will do the same thing.

I have ab ATI graphics card in an XP Pro machine. The ATI icon in the tray does exactly what you describe. Maybe your vid card has a similar utility?

Re: Display Settings Icon (XP Pro Version 5.1.2600 Build 2600)

I think you're on the right track Ricky. My card is a S3 Virge DX/GX cheapie and although the driver was found in the XP install, I don't think it's totally compatible. It only provides two settings of Medium 16 and High 32 colors. Under ME it provided the whole spectrum from 256 on up. I'm pretty sure the the icon question is related to the card as well. I tried Mark's advice and installed QuickRes from powertoys and it displayed a screen stating that it couldn't work unless my monitor could display at least 256 colors. Since a 256 isn't a current option it probably assumed that there were no higher options either. Anyway, I'm going to try other cards if I have time this weekend and see if any of them provide better results. I'm ready to purchase another card if necessary. Would you mind giving me more details about yours? Thanks alot.

    Try MultiRes 1.36 here http://www.entechtaiwan.com/news.htm
Says compatible with XP and if you haven't purchased a new video card yet.

FANTASTIC! Thanks very much, Jolas! It works just as QuickRes did and you saved me a few bucks. Other than this little bug, my video card is otherwise adequate for my usage.
Thanks again! You made my day.
