    Task Pane (Office XP)

When I start MS Word, the Task Pane starts up and immediately goes away. How do I get it to stay? I have no problem with Excel or Power Point just Word. I checked the Options > View menu and the "Startup Task Pane" is checked. The only thing I did recently was bring over my "normal.dot" from my work computer that also uses Office XP. I wanted the same icons etc. Didn't think that would have anything to do with it though. I deleted it so that Word would rebuild but that didn't make any difference. The Task Pane still goes away. Any ideas?

If you have any templates in the startup directory then the startup task pane will not appear when word is first opened. You can either remove any templates from the startup directory or install the WOPR add-in which overcomes this problem.

    Hi Tony,
Thanks for your reply. How do I find out what the startup directory is? How do I find out if a template is there or not? Sorry to be so dense.
    Thanks again.

Tools => Options => File Locations => Startup => Modify
Note the current location and then cancel so you don't change it.

Browse to the startup directory with Windows Explorer and look for files with a .DOT extension.

    Thanks Stuart.
I went to the Startup directory and there aren't any files in there at all, of any type. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

The Microsoft knowledge base article about this "feature" (they constructed word to work that way!) is Q295341
This should help you solve your problem.

    Tony,
You were right! After reading the MS article, I went to the "other" startup folder under Program Files and there was a .dot file there. I deleted it and now it works fine.
    Thanks again for you help!
