Error rebuilding Registry - W98SE

About once a month or so I rebuild the registry (by entering from the dos boot screen - scanreg /fix /opt) on my W98SE system - however this time I'm getting from 97% to 98% done and I get the following error:

Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space in your windows drive. If that doesn't work, then you will need to install windows to a new directory

I've removed all that can be removed from all of the temp directories and defragged the drive (several times), run regclean.exe (several times) and still I get the same error. I have not installed anything since the last time I rebuilt the registry.
The system appears to be running OK, but I would like to be able to rebuild the registry as I'm planning to install (and probably uninstall) some software in the next week or so. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Have you run a Scandisk?
How big is the Registry and how much free space do you have?

I would try running the /fix and /opt switches separately - it may be snagging on something when trying to do both at the same time.

My gut feeling on things like this is that - unless you are actually experience problems - the effort possibly required to resolve it isn't worth it.
Otherwise for your ref: Q184023

Have not run scandisk recently, and I have pleny of free space - 7G on a 20G FAT32 drive.

I'll try the switches one at at time and if that fails, I'll run scandisk and try it again - then if that fails - like you say it's probably not worth the effort to find the real culprit and my system does appear to be running OK.
