DOS Commands (Win98 SE SR-1a)

Hi All:
I know virtually nothing about DOS. Could someone tell me the difference between copy & xcopy?

One of Woody's last issues talked about creating a batch file for backing up certain files. I want to do that. I know I can create one for copying certain files to another drive, but I wanted to know which command might be more useful.

Also, in his example of xcopy, he uses a /h switch? I could not find that listed under xcopy switches. Does this just mean it will copy hidden files, or does it have another meaning?

Thanks in advance.

XCOPY can be used to copy a single file, or a group of files, or subdirectories with their files. There is no /h switch that I know of for this command. COPY copies a single or group of files, not subdirectories. There is no /h switch for this command either.

I have to correct myself: there is an /H switch for XCOPY. It wasn't in my old DOS 6.22 book but it was available from the dos window by typing XCOPY/? and viewing the listed switches there.

Hi Preston:
Thanks for the reply & information. I wonder if Woody had a typo. In WWW for XP #2.06 at http://www.woodyswatch.com/winxp/archtemplate.asp?2-n06, about 3/4 the way down the page, he has this line:

xcopy "cocuments and Settings*.*" "d:Backup" /d /e /c /h /y

Do you think there's a difference in XP?

Hi Preston:
Thanks for responding. I looked at xcopy /? | more before I posted & I couldn't see an h switch. Now I see it. I don't know how I missed it the first time. Think it's time for me to go to sleep. Thanks for your help.

Thank you both for two great sites. It's a little late to start learning DOS, but...
