Header Margins/Page Margins

I need to create a document with the same header on every page -- left and right header margins set to 0.5". Every page (the main document part), however must have left/right margins of 1". I cannot figure out how to do this without manually putting continuous section breaks on each page. Can Word do what I need? Thanks!

Yes, Format -> Styles... -> Header
Modify
Add a half-inch negative indent for both left and right margins.

Change the Tab settings (probably from a Center tab at 3" to one at 3.5" and a Right Tab at 7" instead of 6."

For more on headers and footers:
See http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm for information on how to handle headers and footers.

For something more in depth you may want to look at:

Hope this helps.

Charles,

Not having much success with this. Before filling you in though, I need to check out your reference for detailed header info. Get back to you...

Hi, Kevin. I've attached a sample file for you to look at. Maybe it will give you an idea of what Charles is speaking of.

Karen,

That's wonderful. You're a peach. I don't know why I could not set up the style properly, BUT it may have something to do with the fact that I have a table in the header? Maybe not. I also did not set the tab at 7". That seems to be important, no?

I'll make that change and see what happends. If no go, I'll just pitch the table.

Hi Kevin:

You don't need to change the tab. If you want to keep the table, you can. You just have to trick Word a little.

1. Make your document with .5 margins under page setup.
2. Open the header/footer.
3. Insert your table. It will stretch from margin to margin.
4. Select the table, choose cell height & width (in Word 2000, it's table properties). On the row tab, make the alignment center (default is left).
5. Go back to the document, page setup, & make the margin the way you want.

Note: You can make such a table in any document & save it as an Autotext entry. Then you can insert it into the header/footer, regardless of the page margins.

More than one way to skin...

Phil,

One more comment: I just tried this tip and wow, so simple and perfect. Just what I needed!

Now how did you figure that out? Do I just not know how to think in Wordspeak?

And how do all our average secretaries, clerks, managers, and lawyers learn all these tricks?

...yeah, I know, I'm supposed to teach them.. Oh boy..

Thanks, Phil... much simpler than my rudimentary effort.

Actually, Karen, I like your way better. It's more flexible, & Word tables complicate a document (especially in Word 2000). But, your welcome.

Phil,

I had to use this tip again, and I just had to ask you again. How did you learn this trick?

I discovered the heart of the "trick" is the centering of the table. I just have to know where you learned about this, if you don't mind.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin:

Actually, the way I learn most things, trial & error & error &...

Since you said you used a table, I just kept experimenting until I found a way to set up the correct size in the header. I sorta get a kick out of figuring out ways to do things.

Phil,

That's a common trait with most of us around here, I suspect: "...get a kick out of figuring out ways to do things."

Thanks for the reply. It's encouraging.
