    Automate task (2000)

I have spreadsheets that is sorted by group number. What I do manually now is after each set of group numbers I insert a row and then do a count. Is there any way to automate this so that each set of like group numbers are counted??

Have you looked at Data, Subtotals? You can subtotal like groups based on a field in the data table. (If you then need to, you can then select the subtotals outline level, select the entire table including header and grand totals, and sort on the basis of the unique groups.)

From what you describe, the only challenge might be defining unique fields. For example, if the field is five digits and you wanted to use all sets of groups where the first three digits are the basis for the subtotal, you may have to create a field column for this "first three digits of another field" field.

    Linda,

Another way to obtain a count within a group would be to use the following formula:
    =count(YourRangeHere,YourGroup#Here)

You don't necessarily have to insert a blank row between groups.
