    Styles from a template (W97, WinNT4)

I've just been handed a document and asked to format it as per a standard template we have. Simple, I thought - I just attach the template, tick 'auto update doc styles' box, click OK and it's done.

Ha ha flippin' ha. Is it just. The template is attached, the box is ticked - and the styles have taken not a blind bit of notice!

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here? Or is there a way to manually tell Word to update the document to the new styles (with the same names, of course)?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Beryl,

Not sure why that wouldn't have worked, but you could try updating the definitions of all the styles via the Organizer - just copy the styles from the template over the existing styles in the document - worth a try.

I tried that one too! Same effect - ie not much. I ended up just going through and resetting all the headings etc to the same heading etc style as they *said* they were already - not too much work as I have a toolbar set up to apply all the standard styles with one click each, but very irritating!

    Thanks anyway!

    Hi Beryl,

If some manual formatting has been applied on top of the styles, the styles won't update. You could check for that with Shift+F1.

In case you find out that there is some manual formatting applied, you could get rid of that with Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Q, Ctrl+Spacebar, but that might be too radical.

If for example the font has been changed, you can change the font back to the style default with a find/replace, then save the document. That would get rid of the manual font formatting without destroying other kinds of manual formatting (bold, italic...)

Maybe you can find the time to write a little procedure that would present a listbox of styles in use, and you could use ctrl+click multiple selection to pick the ones that should be reset to their definitions, and then the procedure would go through and do it. Or maybe someone already has?

That's a good idea, jscher! Unfortunately I haven't the faintest idea how to go about it - so if someone has something that might be useful, I'd love to hear from them!

Try copying <font color=blue>formResetStyles</font color=blue> from this document to a template and see if it does what you want...

You can use the Organizer to copy the styles over the current definitions.

Using a copy of your document, select all, press Ctrl-Q and Ctrl-Spacebar. This should remove all direct formatting from your document (probably all character style formatting as well). What happens now?

(addendum - I see this was already suggested. Did you try it?)

    Hi Stuart,

Your form is really great! I'm sure I will use it a lot in the future.

You could adapt it to remove manual formatting selectively; for example instead of
    <pre> .Font.Reset</pre>

    you could use
    <pre> .Font.Name = _
    ActiveDocument.Styles(paraNext.Style).Font.Name
    .Font.Size = _
    ActiveDocument.Styles(paraNext.Style).Font.Size</pre>

to reset font and font size, but keep character styles, bold

Maybe this could even be extended to provide a set of checkboxes on the form to show which attributes you want to reset.

    One day...

    Wow, indeed! <img src=/S/trophy.gif border=0 alt=trophy width=15 height=15> I've added your form to my personal global template.

I would like to convert this to a global template (Add-In) and put it on my Word download page (addbalance.com/word/download/index.htm) (and the CD-ROM for my FAQ).

Would I have your permission to do so? I would give credit to you for the code/form. Would you like me to include an email address as well? You would be welcome to email me directly about this.
