    vbaproject.otm goes 'missing' (Outlook 2K sr1)

I have a user who keeps "losing" her vbaproject.otm file. I have written (and signed) a few macros for Outlook that are stored in that file. She has the same file as everyone else in our office. Occasionally, when she uses one of the macros, she gets a warning stating that "the macro project vbaproject.otm cannot be found" (that might not be the exact text of the macro). When she reboots her computer, she's fine.

Here's our setup--we're using Win2K Pro with Office 2K SR1. These macros are called using a toolbar button stored in the outcmd.dat file. The machines are imaged, and other users with the exact same image are not having this problem.

Here's the kicker--we are using roaming profiles, and I've noticed on her machine that if I disconnect her from the network, those macros won't work (they should, as they should be stored locally and be pulled from the copy in the default location). Also, if I disconnect her home directory while leaving her connected to the network, she gets the error, indicating that she is somehow using her network copy of the file, instead of the one on her local machine. I have completely re-created her windows profile to no avail.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am at a loss, and this is a partner plus a very nice woman who is very technically literate. This is by no means a "user error" situation.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts...

It sounds to me like this Outlook client is configured for Offline use: synchronize then disconnect. By I would not be surprised if the problem has something to do with the roaming profile. Can you verify that Windows is indeed updating the user's profile on the local disk when changes are made AND on the LAN when the user logs out?

What about a user account in the Win2k Users and Passwords dialog? Are all users configured the same?

No, the offline settings are fine (in fact, it's a workstation, not a laptop, so we don't even have offline folders configured).

As for the roaming profile--yes, I can confirm that that changes are being reflected back and forth on log in and log out.

Hmm. I hadn't looked at her permissions on the local machine (we have Win2K Pro on the desktops, although our network is still mixed with the PDC in NT4). I'll take a look at that.

Hey. Sorry for the delayed response--I was sent travelling unexpectedly! In any event, I have confirmed that the users are administrators over the local machine.

Do you have any other thoughts? This is an ongoing thing, and because it is resolved if the user reboots, it hasn't been deadly (so to speak) but it is really getting old and I'd love to figure out what is causing it.

Grasping at straws here, but (since everything is imaged) is the hardware identical to a "problem-free" set-up? HTH

As far as I can tell--everything is the same. This problem is happening to random users now, not just this one. It is very frustrating, because it clearly doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens to enough people that I know it isn't user error.

Here's a thought, though--do you (or anyone) know if anything about the vbaproject.otm file is different if we switched from Office2K Premium to Office2K Pro? When we first rolled out Outlook, we used Premium (we weren't using any of the rest of the suite). Now, we've rolled out Win2K with the full Office Professional suite. I was using the same vbaproject.otm file. Would anything have changed with that?

At some point, I seem to recollect switching an installation from Premium to Pro without effect on my Outlook VBA. Do you not have an admin user profile database? Running some form of query or Excel sort on your affected users might yield some sort of unexpected correlation. HTH

An "admin user profile database"? I'm feeling particularly ignorant here. How exactly would that work?

<img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>Looks like the suggestion may not be practicable. Some organisations button themselves down so that they have a detailed inventory of each workstation - inclusive of components. This may not be your case. It just seems that your use of images (as described) eliminates any local software variables - so it must be some either kind of hardware variable (REALLY grasping at straws) or something in the server configurations.

Is DMS a common feature of your problem installations?
