Blank CDs not recognized (XP home)

I don't know what happened, but when I put a blank CD into the drive, XP doesn't recognize that I want to burn to it. It used to work. What SERVICES must be started...I can check there...

I still would like to know what SERVICES are necessary for the CD-ROM writing.... <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15> I did, however figure out the problem. Somehow the drive letters flipped...so my writer is now E: instead of D:. <shrug> How in the world that happened, I have no idea...

Welcome to the club. If you'll search this forum, you will find many threads about CD-RW.
In brief: you have CD-R and CD-RW and CD-R was listed before CD-RW during WinXP installation. This is the source of all problems.

If you have Easy CD Creator installed, the workaround is:
    1. Using DirectCD Format Utility, format your disc.
    2. Copy all files you neet to the disc.
    3. When ejecting, choose the option "Read on any computer".

For native XP burning abilities, the service is called IMAPI CDROM Burning Service. I prefer to disable it and use third party software to do my burns, because XP's built-in engine creates open-session CDs which don't always work for me.

Thanks. Seems that I was trying to get off easy with the lousy built-in service. Based on your suggestion and the other, I'll be getting Roxio pronto. Thanks!

Thanks. I was guessing that service...didn't know if there were any others. Based on your suggestion, I'll be getting Roxio pronto (the new Easy CD thing). Thanks again!
