    delete extra pdfmaker toolbar (2002)

I ran the upgrade to go from Adobe Acrobat 5.0 to 5.05. Previously I had v4.0. After the install I now have an extra floating toolbar titled "Acrobat 4.0". I have tried to remove it via Tools>Customize>toolbars which removes it for the session, but it is back the next time I run Excel. How do I permanantly get rid of the old version's custom toolbar.

Go to tools, addins and uncheck any that seem to refer to acrobat.

There are several add-ins there, but none refer to Adobe Acrobat. From looking at the Adobe support site, there appears to be a file called pdfmaker.xla that contains the macro that creates these icons and the their functionality. I have tried renaming them (there are two in different folders,) but the the extra toolbar remains.

Don't rename them, delete (or move) them.

Try removing all of the files from your XLStart directory. Again, remove them by moving them to another directory which is not a subdirectory of XLStart, don't just rename them. If the toolbar goes away, then put the files back one at a time until you find out which one is causing it.

Re: delete extra pdfmaker toolbar (2002)

I think we are on the right track. When I deleted pdfwriter.xla the toolbar remains, but when you click on it a dialog box comes up that says "pdfwriter cannot be found". So it appears we are looking at the right macro we just need to figure out what is driving the toolbar.

Btw, there are two files, pdfmaker.xla and pdfwriter.xla. It appears we are working with pdfwriter.xla from the not found message.

Emptied the XLStart folder into another folder. This succeeded in removing the two acrobat 5 icons, but that pesky Acrobat 4 pdf toolbar is still floating there. It may be time to call Adobe.

No, don't call them. Just rightclick any toolbar, select customize, select the offending one from the list and choose delete. If the pdf....xla's are safely deleted, it should not resurface again.

Re: delete extra pdfmaker toolbar (2002)

Just a thought. I use Adobe Acrobat too but never used the toolbar for producing PDFs. Anyway, could it be that this toolbar, or rather the XLA file that it is driven from, exists in an alternate start up folder? I was wondering if in your Tools, Options, General setup page there is an alternate start-up folder listed which may contain the offending XLA file. Perhaps you could try searching your hard drive for all files ending in .XLA. You may find something connected to the problem.

Re: delete extra pdfmaker toolbar (2002)

I have solved the problem, but I resorted to a rather heavy-handed approach. I uninstalled Acrobat. Even then the PDF 4.0 still showed up! Then I deleted all remaining pdfwriter.xla and pdfmaker.xla files and shortcuts from the various folders they were hiding in. This got rid of the extra toolbar. Then reinstalled Acrobat.

Deleting the pdf xla files would have sufficed.
