Woody's 'GREEN FOLDER'

A reader in the Windows XP Forum asked about the tip Woody had in a newsletter about making a green folder icon for whichever folder happens to be open. Evidently the freeware program Woody mentioned NOW leads to a broken link. Heck, I can't even find which of Woody's newsletters he published the tip in, and I don't throw any of 'em away!

Anyway, since I had kept both Woody's green icon AND the freeware program called MyProperties, I put 'em both into one zip file and made it available for downloading from my web site. When you follow this link, just SAVE the zip file to your hard drive and go from there.

Mark, if you're reading this, maybe you can add the issue number of which Woody newsletter the tip was in. I'm putting this post on the General Windows board since I know I've successfully used the green folder trick on a Win98, a WinME and now an XP Pro machine. If Mark (or one of the other Mods) feels this post should be elsewhere, obviously one of 'em could move it.

I don't think it takes much instruction - MyProperties doesn't need to be installed, you just run it.

A search at Woody's for 'green folder pulls up Vol.4 No.8 rather smartly.
(The links in the article do appear to be valid.)

Well, son-a-ma-gun! Thanks, Leif, I just learned something about Netscape Messenger that I never knew! I have all of my Woody's newsletters I subscribe to in my mail folders but evidently when you use Netscape's search functions on your messages, it won't find stuff that's in HTML formatted messages. I DO HAVE that volume!

Well, I'm gonna leave the zip file up on my web site, unless one of you Mods thinks I shouldn't - I'm open to your opinions.

I just did a search at Woody's archive!
Look for the W*W link at the bottom of every page here and that takes you straight to a search form.

I would say it's up to you as to whether or not you want to leave your zip up - if you'll pardon the expression - I don't believe there should be any copyright issue if it is readily available.

Re: Woody's 'GREEN FOLDER'

I've tried this on Win2k and can't get it to work. In the help file for Myproperties it says the the registry key is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEMICROSOFTWINDOWSCURRENTVERSIONEX PLORERSHELLICONS
now that doesn't exist on my machine: any ideas where I should be looking?

You can't get the Green Folder to show?
Did you click on the Rebuild Cache button?

I did but it froze up and I killed it to protect some work - I'll try it again.

Hmm. Probably because you're working in too many dimensions

Probably. I've tried it a couple more times and it doesn't want to play. I'm guessing it doesn't know where the icon cache is. I don't either, hence the question about registry keys.
