You will most likly need to format the hard drive and do a clean install of XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Failed reinstall (Windows Xp home edition)

Let's start with the basics, first. When you say that you can't even get XP going, how far does it get? If it won't start, you surely are seeing some kind of error message, or at the very least it is stalling at boot somewhere. What happens?

As far as the recovery console, if you have not worked in a command-line environment like DOS, you will likely find it fairly daunting. Using it requires that you have a basic understanding of the system files and their functions. If you don't, then you would not be able to determine what to replace. And if the thought of a black screen with a lot of text scares you, then it definitely is not an option! This makes it all the more important to know where your computer is failing so that a better recommendation can be made, even if that is formatting and re-installing Windows.

Re: Failed reinstall (Windows Xp home edition)

Ok the error messages I have gotten are:
Setup failed to remove Product catalog IEEXCEP.CAT Error Code 426
Setup failed to remove Product Catalog SP1.CAT
Fatal Error failed to install Product Catalogs
The setup files should have more info

Those error messages pop up after I try to repair the install. , I am going to have to my other computer and see exactly what and where it is that it starts giving me the errors. So I will be back on shortly with more info. Oh and by the way I do know how to work in Dos . Thats what I started messing around in years ago... LOL Thanks

Re: Failed reinstall (Windows Xp home edition)

ok this is what happens. Whenever we restart computer with windows XP cd, it starts setting up. The it asks if I want to comtinue with upgrade or repair last install. So I click repair, then it only shows one setup that can be repaired. So I pick 1 . it start setup . Then the errors start popping up. They go like this::
Fatal error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.
Setup failed to install the product catalog this is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more info.

    System Setup Log-- ( C:WINDOWSsetuperr.log)
    warning:
Setup failed to remove the product catalog IEEXCEP.CAT
    Warning:
Setup failed to remove the product catalog SP1.CAT
    ERROR:
The Signature for WinXp Home Edition Upgrade is invalid. The error code is 426
The service has not been started.
    Does any of that help?
Thanks in advance for any Help!

It sounds like the Version on the hard disk us not one that can be upgraded from the CD you are using. You may have an OEM version on the hard disk that is not elegible for upgrade. If you bought the PC with XP installed and the vendor sent the CD with it, then you need to contact that vendor.
