squares symbols appearing (word 2000 sp2)

the problem i am having is that documents are corrupting with symbols and squares appearing on them. sometimes text is lost but not always. This happens in a network enviroment on different machines and i have not been able to find any corralation between the different occurances.
this can happen while the document is being worked on or when it's saved and opened.
it seems to be happening more and more frequently.

    word 2000 sp2, windows 2000 sp2, mcafee virus scan. v4.5.1
    any suggestions would be appreciated.

We are intermittently getting this problem too, and haven't found any complete fix. One thing definitely to check for is to make sure that "Allow Fast Saves" is not turned on.

One thing that sometimes worked in Office 97 is to find out the equivalent for the square box and then do a find and replace on it. Replace it with a space, or nothing.

But I then I tried that on Office XP and it didn't work. Perhaps the square box symbol equivalent has changed. But if you can locate the master list of weird symbols, it takes just a few minutes to check to see if your find and replace would work. I would like to relocate that master list for reference.
