Critical Update will not install

Every day I get a Critical Update notification on both my Win98 desktop and my W2K laptop. When I allow it to check, the same update is listed on both - Security Update, February 13, 2002 (MSXML 4.0). (I thought there was an all-inclusive security update on Feb. 12?) On both computers, when I choose to update, the file download completes (the progress bar goes all the way across and the KB count goes all the way to the total), and the installation begins (the progress bar goes about 1/3 of the way across, sometimes 2/3), but then the next screen always says that the update was not installed.

What is this update? Should I care about it?
If so, what can I do?
If not, is there a way that I can stop notification of this particular update only?

Re: Critical Update will not install

I make it a point to always care about critical updates. I also make it a point to let other people take the plunge so I'm not getting burned with some obscure issue.

Clear your Temporary Internet Files. Make a note of where they are being kept on your hard drive. Then, boot to a clean DOS prompt - not a reboot to DOS, but a reboot where you choose "Command Prompt Only." Go to the Temporary Internet Files directory and delete index.dat. You will lose all of your cookies in this process, but it also ensures that there are no residual weirdnesses in your temp files. You can't delete INDEX.DAT from within Windows (although it may appear that you can).

Upon rebooting into Windows, hit the Windows Update website and try it again - hopefully with better luck.

    Thank you for your reply.

I cleared my Temporary Internet Files folder of all files and cookies and double-checked to be sure it was empty. I rebooted and chose Command Prompt Only from the boot menu. There was no index.dat file in the Temporary Internet Files folder; in fact, there were no files at all. (And yes, I re-verified that I was looking at the right folder.) Rebooted into Windows and went straight to the Critical Update. Same thing - it downloaded but did not install.

    Any other suggestions?

Forgot to mention that the file may be hidden. And it may also reside in CONTENT.IE5 (even if you are using IE6) under the Temporary Internet Files folder. If it is hidden, to view it from a command prompt you will need to use the following command:

ATTRIB -h INDEX.DAT

Hope that gets it for you!!

Thanks. It was in the CONTENT.IE5 folder, which did not show up in a DIR listing.
However, deleting it still made no difference!

    What's next?

Keep that link too, because it's a blessing if you want to download things like this and save them for future (and usually inevitable) re-installations of Windows...although I've never had a reason to reinstall Windows myself.

Re: Critical Update will not install

    The plot thickens....

The update about which I keep getting notification is not listed on that site. (!)

Thanks for the link; I have bookmarked it.
I had to reinstall Windows for the first time just a couple of weeks ago. The reinstallation was quick and easy, but making sure that I had everything I needed easily accessible before I started, and then reinstalling all of the apps and copying back all of the data - that was another thing altogether. Talk about time consuming!

Re: Critical Update will not install

Well, it must not be that critical if Microsoft didn't post it.....wait, that's a logical conclusion and we're talking Microsoft.

I wouldn't worry about it if you can't get it there; you can also try going to their security page and looking for it there. They typically post security releases there first, and then Windows Update comes second, a day late and a dollar short - or even a week or two late.

I agree with you on the restoration process. I've gotten to the point where I keep all of the data I care about in one location, and then I point My Documents to that location. That includes the software patches that keep my system current, service packs and whatnot. I can handle a reinstallation of the OS and apps much better that way!

Re: Critical Update will not install

OK. I found it on the security page and saved it to my HDD.
    It still will not install.

When I run the executable, a progress bar zips across and then nothing, nada, zip.
I rebooted and went back to Windows Update, and there it is, still listed as being needed. I tried reinstalling from there again; still no go.

Read throught the bulletin for this patch, which includes the statement (and I quote): "Technical support is available from Microsoft Product Support Services. There is no charge for support calls associated with security patches." However, when I called MS, they said that there was no charge for help with finding and downloading the patch, but support for installation is fee-based. Does this sound like double-speak to you?

Re: Critical Update will not install

Double-speak....yep, it has that smell. It's gotta be painful, then the patch can most likely wait. If my guess is correct it will be included in the forthcoming service release for Internet Explorer 6. Don't sweat it too much - chances are very small that you will be exploited for this single vulnerability over all the other tasty targets on the Internet. Just make sure you practice safe computing, updating your virus definitions, and if you're on a broadband connection, using a firewall. Oh, and watch those email attachments too.
