    =table() function (2000 SR-1)

    Hello all,

    We have received a spreadsheet which contains a formula looking like this:

    {=TABLE(B3,B5)}

    The =TABLE() function doesn't appear to be a built in function and I am guessing that it is provided by an add-in. But which one. I have speculated that it might be contained in the Small Business edition of MS Office. Can anyone comment on this?

    Re: =table() function (2000 SR-1)

    TABLE is an internal "creature" that is generated by Excel when you use the Data | Table menu item. I say creature because it dosn't follow the rule that a function cannot get any data besides its calling parameters. In the attached example, cell E3 is the prototype formula, F3:H3 are the row sources, E4:E6 are the column sources, and F4:H6 is the data generated by Excel. If you select F4:H6, you will see what looks like an array formula {=Table(B4,B3)}, but you should not mess with this formula. To regenerate the table or expand it:
    (1) delete the data that Excel generated
    (2) if desired, add more row or colum headers
    (3) select a rectangle that has the row headers on top and column headers on the left
    (4) Data | Table
    (5) Row source is B4 (this is the cell reference that you used in the upper-left-corner-cell-prototype formula)
    (6) Column source is B3
    (7) Press OK
    (8) To make the chart look nicer, change the font color of the prototype formula to white.

    There is also a "simpler" one-variable data table. For more information, look in Help | Answer Wizard under "what-if analysis" and look at the topic "Ways to forecast values with what-if analysis." And you thought Excel was simple. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> HTH --Sam
