Style Sheets (Office XP)

In using Word XP, the number of style codes (entries) expand every time I make a change to a style. This is annoying. In O2000, you seem to have one style code for each instance of use. How can I stop these multiple variants on a unique style from occurring. In addition and contrary to O2000, I am not able to format a paragraph the way I want, go to style window, click in this window, press enter and then have the style entry modified the way I would like. I am not able to do this to add/modify a style. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have the Keep Track of Formatting checkbox selected underTools/Options, Edit tab.
