Startup Menu Question (XP Home)

Perhaps I have not noticed these items before, but I sware they are new to my "Startup" in msconfig:

updreg.exe (I do not have Office XP installed)
ctfmon
ntuser (3 items)

Is it possible these have been added by a Windows Update file? Are they necessary? Doing a search for ctfmon, I found a MS Knowledge Base article that said deleting ctfmon could cause problems, etc.

Also, about every 10 minutes my PC "beeps"??? What is THAT about?

updreg.exe
ctfmon

Creative stuff. You must have a Soundblaster.

ntuser - no idea. What are the EXEs associated with it and where are they located?

Yeh, recently installed "Sound Blaster Live!" So that takes care of the first two. But what are they for? Can I at least disable them so they don't run at startup?

As for "ntuser", there are no ".exe" files, only ".dat" and ".ini" files. Those files are located here:

C:WINDOWSsystem32configsystemprofile
C:documents and settings

I'm rather concerned about this "beep" still.

updreg is essentially useless. It's a reminder to register your product. However, it runs and exits so it really isn't that big a deal.

I was mistaken about the CTFMON thing (I was thinking of a similarly named Creative service). It IS a part of Office XP, but regardless of whether or not OffXP is on your system, I've disabled it on more than one of my PCs that I work with daily and never had a burp - Office XP does what it does regardless. Try disabling it and see what happens. It's costing you 2MB RAM, so if you're not pinched, it's probably not worth the effort.

NTUSER is your user-specific registry file (or Hive, in proper parlance). Forget you saw that one!!

This beep thingy....dunno, if it's the system speaker it could have something to do with the BIOS, or some little EXE running in the background that forces it to happen - such as NAV, but if it's consistently every ten minutes, that's mighty shady.

Leif,

Yeh, I read that article first thing before even posting here, and that's why I wrote that I didn't have Office XP installed. I have Office 2000 SR-1. I can't figure out where it came from? Anyway, I disabled it in the Startup menu and so far I haven't experienced any ill effects.

Important Beep Information
As long as the beeps continue to occur n minutes apart, you're okay. However, when the pace picks up and the beeps are coming in 1 second intervals, STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND RUN LIKE HELL !

Seriously though - You might check the main board manual and look under beep codes or POST codes. If it's a system beep, it probably has some significance. My experience here is that system beeps only happen during the system startup and do not continue after the operatng system is up and running.

Otherwise, it may be a software generated beep.
