Getting hold of styles in template (Word 2k)

I have received a document where I'm not happy with the styles. I have a template containing just what I want, and of course: my first thought is to attach that template. Then I expected to get 2 effects:
    - Access to my "favorite styles" in that template
    - The "standard" styles (heading1, body text, TOC1 etc) would change appearance to the ones in MY template.

None of those happened - Any help/tips out there on HOW do I get the two wanted results ?

Could it be that the paras in the document you have received have also had manual paragraph formatting applied? If so that will be preserved, despite your template's styles. But you could remove manual paragraph formatting by using Ctrl+Q (which effectively reverts the text to the format defined by the style). To do it for the whole document, select the whole document, then press Ctrl+Q. It is certainly worth trying. You could also use Ctrl+spacebar which removes manual character formatting.

    Hi Arild,

When you attach a new template, styles don't automatically come over. Use the Organizer (Format>Styles>Organizer Button) to copy the styles from your template to the document..

When you attach the template, check the box to update the styles from the attached template. (You don't need to use the organizer for this.)

But, if your document was not formatted using styles, you'll still have to start over from scratch.
