Document corruption (office 2000 or 97)

I was wondering if there is any tools to fix corrupt documents or excel files, I have a user who's doc's and xls's files seem to be opening in the wrong format, I tried virus checker, upgrading from office 97 to 2000 and the pc has been wiped at this stage, (running win98 second ed). The file association is pointing to office by default but looks to be wrong. Any suggestions PLEASE.

    Maybe http://www.officerecovery.com/.
But some more info on "The file association is pointing to office by default but looks to be wrong", could help to identify the problem.

Thanks for the tip, it didn't work but office recovery looks like a pretty useful tool I'd use in the future.
