    File Extensions (Word 6 (?))

If I rename a Word file from, say, Whatsup.doc to Whatsup.tim - or any other extension that isn't already 'owned' on the syystem, it still opens in Word when double clicked. This appears to work on all Word files since mid -1994, and I suspect this marks the Word 2/Word 6 change. Anybody know how Word - or Windows - manages this trick?

I suspect that Word recognizes the file as a Word file not only by the extension, but also by some embedded identifyer or code in the file itself.

Well, yes indeed, as you also get a enhanced Properties dialog on Word files - I was wondering how it was done, though
