DVD CD-RW won't work since I upgraded!! (Win XP Home)

Hello all,
Another client of mine wanted to be upgraded from Win ME to Win XP Home. Everything but the DVD drive and the CD-RW drive is fine and works very well.
The DVD is the real pain! It sees DVD's as CD's or even worse...it does not even see a disk in the drive at all no matter how many times I open and close it. If I reboot with a DVD in the drive, it may or may not work. They have both Intervideo WinDVD 2000 and Intervideo WinDVD 3.0.
The CD-RW drive seems to be hit or miss 6 out of 10 times. The system is a Dell P4 1.5 ghz 8100 series. They use Nero 5.5 and CloneCD for their burning.
Dell had me download and install a patch but it has not wortked and they seem to be out of answers!
I have been chasing this with no luck. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both drives and software.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you or the owner get the XP ugrdae from Dell or a retail copy?

A lot of OEM versions of Windows have major problems upgraded to a new 'retail' copy. The OEM upgrades will have the drivers for their hardware and should work. You may not be getting the correct drivers when you down load. They have been built to run on the TWEAKED OEM version.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Hello Dave,
The upgrade came from Dell directly. When they purchased the comp in September/01 they were entitled to a free upgrade to Win XP Home.
As I said, everything works great and resource/memory management is out of this world on every system I have worked with. This one DVD and CD-RW drive issue continues to befuddle me. I have read that others are having this problem too. Also, Dell recognizes this issue but has no solution. their "Patch" seems to have helped everyone else according to Dell.

"Dell recognizes this issue but has no solution", looks like it is in their court. It is their hardware and drivers and they can not solve it, then they are the problem. I know this does NOT help you and your clients. Have you tried another drive to see if it will then work?

Once again - welcome to the club!

You MUST connect CD-RW drive on the primary IDE controller and CD-ROM on the secondary one (or, at least, CD-RW - secondary master and CD-ROM - secondary slave, that is not recommended) BEFORE installing Windows XP.

If Windows XP is already installed, there is NO WAY to change its behavior; you must delete the installation and re-install it from scratches.

If you have SCSI CD-RW and IDE CD-ROM, you must disconnect CD-ROM before Windows XP installation. In any case, CD-RW must be before CD-ROM in order:
primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave, SCSI...

Have a nice day!
