    Freeze panes-troubleshooting (Excel-97)

I received a worksheet that is resisting the freeze pane command on the correct row.
For some unknown reason, I keep getting the top row under the column heads on every page of the print preview.
Is there such a thing as artifact data remaining with a sheet?
In other words, if someone had previously froze the wrong pane and sent it to me,
and I correctly froze the intended pane, can it still retain their original data?
I've even tried creating new rows above the offending row.
The only thing that DOES work is shrinking the offending row to nothing,
then I get the correct pagination. What is going on here?

Have you checked File/Page Setup and Sheet tab for rows to repeat at top?

    Good Luck,
