    Auto copy of Normal.dot (XP)

    <img src=/S/grovel.gif border=0 alt=grovel width=31 height=23> Is there a way to have Word make a copy of Normal.dot in the Documents & Settings folder (& Excel's .xla) so you can make a backup of just that folder? Thanks in advance,
    Sherrie B.

    A little confused by what you mean: "so you can make a backup of just that folder" ?? You are asking about backing up the normal.dot file or the D&S folder?

    Nevertheless, the solution is most easily accomplished using the FileSystemObject

    See here

    Check out the CopyFile method.

    Re: Auto copy of Normal.dot (XP)

    I wanted the normal.dot to be automatically copied to the D&S folder each time it is used, so when I do my backups I don't have to search for it to make sure it gets backed up. I am trying to keep all my changed files in one spot.

    Thanks for taking the time to reply,

    Why not copy all of your User Templates to a location under Documents and Settings and then use Tools=>Options=>File Locations to tell Word to use that new location. Now your normal backup regime should back up all your user templates, including Normal.Dot

    In fact, come to think of it, if you have "Documents and Settings" then presumably you are running Windows 2000, isn't the default location for User Templates
    Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates

    That sounds reasonable enough. You already know, of course, that you don't want a backup of Normal in the Word User Template folder location. That could mess things up.

    I realised after I replied, that you posted to the Word forum, not the VB/VBA forum. My reply assumed familiarity with VBA. I'm pretty sure you can't automate the backup without some VBA code.

    Well that explains your first answer!! You lost me after the first line of VBA code!!!

    I am a little confused by the statement "You already know, of course, that you don't want a backup of Normal in the Word User Template folder location. That could mess things up."

    Are you saying that is not the normal.dot to back up? I would of course put it in another folder.

    No, just saying that you don't want normal.dot and normalbackup.dot in the Word User Templates folder.

    I have what's called a class module that "wraps up" the
    functionality in the FileSystemObject class. I can, for
    instance, use that class to copy normal.dot to C:Backups
    when Word starts. My code to do so would look like this:

    With new clsFso
    .FullName = Normaltemplate.fullname
    .FileCopyDestination = "C:Backups"
    .FileCopy
    End with

    I am not sure what you mean by:
    "I have what's called a class module"
    How would you use that or where would you put it?

    Re: Auto copy of Normal.dot (XP)

    Great idea! (I am running XP) But I don't want to back up my 300 megs of other templates also. If I set the "workgroup" templates to one place and the "user" templates to D & S, will the other templates show up all the time?
