Live word count (Word 97 SR-2)

    There was an interesting macro (actually 3 macros) included in the March 16 issue of Word Tips (put out by Discovery Computing Inc.) but I couldn't make it work in Word 97. Apparently just copying and pasting the code in as a new macro isn't the proper procedure. I sent the newsletter an e-mail, but for some reason it couldn't be delivered. I'd like to use this macro if anyone could explain to me the proper method for inserting it into Word. I would attach the macro here but that might infringe on DCI's copyright. I hope someone in this forum is familiar with the newsletter and that macro.

    Perhaps they "borrowed" that from Woody's Lounge?
    If the tip is freely available, could you post a link?

    I can email the issue to you but according to DCI's FAQ, their newsletters are not supposed to be posted publicly.

    Hi Clark,

    Thank you for your mail.
    The macro is different from that on Woody's Lounge. It runs on my machine, but displays the character count instead of the word count.

    To get the word count, change the line

lngWords = myRange.ReadabilityStatistics(1).Value

    to

lngWords = myRange.ReadabilityStatistics(2).Value

    or, better, to

lngWords = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropert yWords)

    If you need general help on how to put the macros in Normal.Dot, see this article on the MVP's site.
    After you do this, you have to restart Word, and you will see the word count in the title bar of the window. If it doesn't work, please post back.

    Thanks, Klaus. The reason it wouldn't work for me is that I already had an autoexec macro. I changed it to autonew and it worked.
