    caption issue (word 97)

    Hi,

We are trying to insert captions for figures we wanted only some pages to contain sub captions.
For eg 5 th page may contain two figures it should get FIGURE 5 - 1 & FIGURE 5 - 2 but from 6th page captions should continue showing normal FIGURE 6.
Include Chapter numbers wont help us as we are not classifying these with chapter numbers.

any ideas how to get this done
    bye

The built-in Caption won't do it. You can solve the first part by using a { PAGE } field as your caption number, assuming you want all figures on each page numbered with the page number.

The second part seems very difficult to automate. The rule would be something like, if this is the first figure on this page and there is a second figure on this page, add a -1, otherwise, add nothing. If this is the second figure on the page, add -2, otherwise, add nothing. I took a quick look at the {SEQ } field, but to that you would need to add something "forward-looking" and "page aware," and I don't know of any way to do that.

    Hi Extreme & Jefferson:
I took a look at this yesterday & concluded there was no way to automate this with {SEQ} fields. I could not get an IF field to evaluate a {PAGE}. i.e. something like {IF {page} = {SEQ} etcetera } didn't work. Unless there is a way to evaluate this using VBA...

Try this solution. It will work if each page is uniquely numbered (ie you don't restart the page numbering)

You need to nest some fields but once it is done you can use the same thing for each caption. The curly brackets should be field entries
