Error running Network Setup Wizard (Windows XP Professional Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpclnt_qfe.010827-1803))

When I run the Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Professional, I get the following error message:

The instruction at "0x77f78bf9" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program
Click CANCEL to debug the program

    Any suggestions?

I would say that you have a memory chip that is bad.

What happens when you select "Cancel" and run the debug?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Thanks for your quick response.

I ran the wizard again to see what would happen when I ran the debug. When I ran it, I forgot to override the default Workgroup name of MSHOME (I had typed in something different the last time I ran the wizard). The error message did not appear.

I ran the wizard again without overriding any defaults to verify the result. The error message appeared again. In the debug, I got the following error message:

Unhandled exception at 0x77f78bf9 in SPOOLSV.EXE: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000.

I ran the wizard a third time, again without overriding any default, and the error message DID NOT appear.

It looks like temporary installation files on your hard disk were corrupted. Usually it happens during upgrade of previous version of Windows.
If you're trying to install XP over previous version of Windows, in case of Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) run Scandisk with Surface scan before installation and try to install WinXP again; in case of Windows NT/2000 run chkdsk /f on all partitions.
If you are trying fresh install, boot from Installation CD, then delete all existing partitions, create a new one(s) and format system partition in NTFS.

    I hope it will work.
