Problems with OE 5.50

I had earlier posted this problem and a couple of folks were kind enough to point me to some references on the KB. Unfortunately the items in question weren't very relevant, and didn't help me out much.

So I'll try again.

Ever more frequently, when I click on an inbox e-mail, I get a window opening up with the message "Msimn has caused an error in URLMON.DLL. Msimn will now close." There is a close button which then causes OE to close down. It starts up again fine, but this event is becoming increasingly frequent.

I'm concerned there might be some creeping error in OE which might ultimately be catastrophic - in the sense that my wife and I work from home and need the e-mail as a principal method of communications and can't afford to lose it. That happened on an earlier machine, and I had to start using Eudora, which is an experience I don't want to repeat.

I have a relatively new Compaq 5000 series, with 128 RAM, a 20 GB hard drive, 700 mhz processor. I'm using OFfice 97 and Windows ME. I've downloaded a few software items, but they all come recommended from reputable sources such as this forum, ZDNet, etc.

Anyone else with some advice out there?

Re: Problems with OE 5.50

Personally, i'd backup my e-mail, and re-install Outlook Express. You may want to consider reverting to Outlook Express 5.0, as the 5.5 product line had been pulled from Microsoft's websites, and was not available for the duration of last week. (Due to undisclosed errors, I presume.) My theory, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Try Outlook Express 5.0 and see if that does the trick!

Hope that helps!

Re: Problems with OE 5.50

This is a tough error, with no easy answers. Here are some of the more common things done to solve this:

Remove Adobe Acrobat 4.05 if installed.

Remove RealPlayer
Remove Comet Cursor (installed by Real Player)
Find and delete any occurrences of Advert.dll
Follow the steps here: MS KB Q254490

Frequently, when this error occurs in OE, it involves also having multiple identities, if you have more than one, you might want to try just going with one, if possible.

Obviously, if any of these work, you can add the other software back, and then decide how to best deal with it.

Thanks folks, I'll give these a try - I do have some of those programs installed.

Seems strange that something as commonplace as Realplayer would not be compatible with OE, but to paraphrase George Carlin - It's a MStery.

Re: Problems with OE 5.50

I've removed real player - manually, it didn't show up in the add/remove programs window. Couldn't find any instances of advert.dll or comet cursor on the hard drive.

We do use two identities in OE, but I'd like to maintain those as long as possible as they reflect the two different positions my wife and I have.

OE seems now to be behaving itself, so we'll see what happens in the near future.

Perhaps I should simply use a larger stick from time to time? Spare the rod, spoil the Outlook Express.

In reference to removing comet cursor etc., there is a program from www.lavasoft.de called AdAware that will help.

Thanks for that great tip. The AdAware program found what it defined as 5 spyware files - three of them I had it remove, and the other two had something to do with IE which my instincts told me to leave well enough alone.

CometCursor wasn't among the files it did find, however.

I'm occasionally getting the original error message in OE, but not anywhere near as frequently as before. One thing which did seem to trigger the error and shutdown seemed to be mailing list-generated e-mails (Dummies guide to, etc) including - gasp - the WOPR Lounge e-mail notification of posts as selected in my user's profile.

Things are much more stble now, so I thank everyone who posted their suggestions.

I'm glad it helped. I find I have to run this every month or so since these little reporting tools keep crawling in.

Re: Problems with OE 5.50

Hi Dave
AdAware is a very useful tool for removing spyware. Unfortunately, it can only get rid of what it knows about. It gets updated every so often.
One thing to be careful of is that apps relying on spyware (eg Go!Zilla) will stop working if you take away their ads in this way - which is a good reason for not using them. Spyware is an invasion of your privacy, done without your express consent, and is more often than not the reason your system suddenly logs on when you're not expecting it to. At that point it is sending home its collected data on your habits and updating itself.
IE does not work in this way, so any purporting to be associated with it can also be removed - I don't believe this would break your browser.
btw Are you also running a firewall, such as the freebie Zone Alarm? This stops things getting in and out unless you've given them leave.
I have both these,(AdAware and the link to the parent website are under Spyware Removal in the Interactive Index) and other protective stuff, available from my website.

Rgds

Thanks for the advice - I'm now using both Zone Alert and have run AdAware, plus Inoculate IT Personal Edition. Talks bout practising safe computing! I'm almost feeling I should be wearing surgical gloves to touch any of the components...
