Extra/Unwanted Start Menu item (XP Home)

I seem to have an "extra" programs link on my Start Menu.

FIRST: I'm wondering if someone could confirm that this is not something which should be there by default. And if it is not, then -

SECOND: How do I remove it?

It looks as though your "extra" is the result of XP's roots in Windows NT. Before Microsoft decided to "simplify" the start menu, there were two sets of Programs, two Startup folders, and possible other duplicates. They were separated by a dividing line, one being for "All Users" and one for the user that was currently logged in. Then along comes the updated start menu and that line vanished - which made it impossible to tell if the items were for the individual logged on, or "All Users".

You can see the individual folders by opening Windows Explorer and looking under Documents and Settings. Removing the folder, even if it is empty, could cause some problems - if a program that is being installed wants to stick a program group there and it doesn't exist, for example. You could use a tool like TweakUI and point the "Programs" folder to one central location for All Users and yourself (Administrator, Jeff, whatever it may be), and then delete the orphan.

My question for you is, how did you get that dividing line in the start menu? I'd love to have that back but I've been too lazy to research and find out if it was even possible, since I primarily work with Windows Explorer just to be certain.

    Mark,

Believe me when I tell you that a very knowledgeable individual (no, not me ) tried for over 2 hours to remove that empty "Programs" folder from the Start Menu without success. As you hinted, removing it caused numerous and much more serious errors and problems. Being used to Win 95/98, this multiple user interface is very confusing to me; even when trying to do something so simple as finding a file using Windows Explorer. That Documents and Settings section is a labyrinth of labyriths, IMHO.

My question for you is, how did you get that dividing line in the start menu?

You are asking the wrong guy!! But, the good news is that this same PC savvy individual might be coming over to my place this Wed. to clean up a few small items and I'll ask him. If anyone knows about the divider HE does.

You can delete ANY item from Start menu right-clicking it and choosing Delete from pop-up menu. This will not affect any programs installed (only the way you can access them).
