    reading adaptec RW CDs elsewhere

I've been given a CD burned on an adaptec CD RW on an IBM Aptiva.

    I'm running Win98SE on a clone with a plain-jane CD reader (not a R/W).

I watched the CD burn. The data is there on the CD on the sourec machine.. I see no data at all on my taget machine CD drive.

I found the adaptec ----> roxio site and found an article that said " ... the cd was burned in data mode rather than TOC (Table Of Contents?) mode ...", and that I should go back and change the CD writer to be TOC mode and try again. That isn't an option right now.

I can't find anything (on the web or here) that says "Here's a program that can read the data and deliver it to you". I know the data is there. I've seen it.

Sure could appreciate any pointers to downloads or drivers that would let me, just this once, drag the data onto my hard drive so's I can start analysing it .....

Most CD-RW can only be read on the same drive that recorded them unless they have been closed. This is why I use a CD-r when I am going to that the CD to another machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Chris, one thing to try, Roxio have a prgram called UDRF Reader that will allow a number of cdrom drives to read CDRWs. It's a tiny download and works very well on any cdrom that is Multiread compatible.

    Its worth a try.

Mike, thanks for this. I grabbed udfread_v5.1.1.213_inst.exe and ran it, it says it is installed and will do its thing whenever a CD is loaded, but to data, nada, nix.

I've searched registry and drives for any evidence of it being there. I can find an un-install entry in the registry, but that's it.

The installation itself was weird - it appeared to be about to let me decide where to install it, but then just ran anyway.

OK I guess your cdrom is not compatible. I have found on various machines that it works on some and not on others. When it works it is a great tool, but when it doesn't its not worh a pinch of salt.

    No more brainwaves I'm afraid.

Thanks Mark, this seems like a better link.

I'm downloading the package as we squeea, but returned the CD yesterday and went via an Iomega ZIP drive.
