Word Hangs on 'Save As' (Windows XP)

My boss recently bought a new computer with XP. It works fine for a few days, but then starts hanging when he tries to "Save As" a file in Word. Any ideas??

Does it hang after he enters a file name and clicks Save, or does it not even allow him to enter a file name? In the first case, you might want to repair Word using the installer. In the latter case, perhaps there is some kind of problem with the folder into which Word wants to save that is slowing down the normal behavior to the point that it appears to hang. For example, it might have hundreds of files in it, or be on a CD or Zip, or contain large files that the virus scanner is struggling to check before allowing Word to display the files. (These are all guesses, of course, maybe it just needs to be shut down and restarted every day!)

Thank you for your response. Here is a more exact run down of what happens. He opens a file, works in it, then tries to "Save As." It freezes and the Word file name on the bottom status bar flashes. He works around it by slowly double-clicking on the file name in the status bar or or doing the cntl+alt+delete. These files are not on a CD or Zip, so that possibility is out. I wonder if it's not an Outlook-related problem, since Outlook is so finicky. If you have any further ideas, I would appreciate it, but don't lose sleep over it. I think it's time to call in a computer tech.
    Thank you

Where are these files being saved, i.e., networked drive, lolcal drive and what folder(s) are being used?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Files are saved to local C Drive, and folders are ones created for individual projects.

Re: Word Hangs on 'Save As' (Windows XP)

    Hi Sammy:
I haven't used Office XP, so this may be way off. In previous versions of Word, Outlook had a "journaling" option that indexed office files. This slowed up applications considerably. If this still exists in XP, you might check Outlook/Tools/Preferences (or is it Options, I don't have Outlook at this computer) & make sure the journaling option is off.

    Hope this helps.

How many files are in the "default" folder and what is the "default" folder?

I would like to thank everyone for their help, but am backing out of the problem now, and will hand it over to a tech.
