    Scanning Images--File Bloat (97)

We have to scan documents so they can be retrieved for later viewing. Running the TWAIN scanner from inside Word imports the files as large bitmaps, about 1 Meg/page. If we use the scanner software and save as JPG, the files are 1/10 the size. When these images are imported into Word, the final file is barely bigger than the individual documents (17 jpg files = 3.01 MB; Word file with the images = 3.38 MB).

However, this is tedious to say the least, especially when you have a 100-page document. Is there any way to automate the process, either from the scanning software or Word?

I know very little about what you get, but Office XP has document imaging and scanning build in. I've used it once. As far as automating the process of scanning lots of documents, my guess is that's what they intended. So, check it out.

Is there a setting on your scanner to scan it as text instead of as an image? Usually, the scanner just remembers the last setting used. You may need to set it to text first. The nice thing about that is you would be able to edit, if the need arose.
