    Data Validation (2000 SR1)

I have a costing sheet where users input a grade code which uses links to another workbook for lookups to calculate various parameters, this version works fine.
I thought I would add drop down lists as a user aid, and my reading of the help file led me to believe that if I defined a name that referred to the range in the external workbook, and then if the data validation source box referred to the defined name, it would obtain the data to list.
However, when I define the name and input the source as ='S:aadata[slabsize.xls]slabsize'!$B$4:$B$200, it accepts this but does not show the name as active? in the sheet, therefore the data validation list has no data?!.
Have I mis-read the help file, or is my approach/referencing at fault?

The other workbook has to be open for this to work.

As an alternative Paul, you might link somewhere in your book to the range you wish to use for the drop down list and then use the "in-workbook" named range for your list.

Thanks for that information, makes my thoughts impractical as the file is accessed by numbers of users form the server, and others use it in the field using the same file on their portables. Having to co-ordinate an open all time [shudder]

    Hi Michael,
An interesting approach, thank you for that. After some experimenting I decided that having 20 rows in a costing model with selection arrows was visually too cluttered. So status quo, I appreciate both the answers to me post.
