    startup problems (Win XP Professional)

I have the following intermittent startup problem:
    - status bar animation displays (the little bar going from left to right)
    - status bar freezes and PC never boots
    - I cold boot and get the screen that asks if I want safe mode, etc.
    - hit enter for a normal boot and all is OK

How do I start to troubleshoot this?

Try this: Start | Run, type:
    chkdsk /f
and hit Enter. Then restart your computer.
If this will not solve your problem, insert your WIndows XP Installation CD and reboot. If prompted, choose Boot From CD. From Setup dialog, choose Repair Windows.
