Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

I recently installed SP-1. Now when I try to open a Word document (Word not active), I get a message that Word cannot find the file. But if I click on the file a second time, Word opens with the document in place. This doesn't happen if Word is already running.

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

I have seen this with documents attached to Outlook email messages. It's very strange and I've yet to figure out why. It almost looks like a timing problem -- Word opens and expects the filename -- which is being passed to it by Outlook -- to point to a real file. But Outlook, which first has to write the attachment to disk as a temp file, has not finished doing that, so Word gives the file not found error. Meanwhile, Outlook finishes copying the attachment to the temp file. So, when you try again, the temp file now exists and Word can open it.

BTW, what OS are you using?

In the old days, any file name with a space anywhere in the path could cause this. Check in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options..., File Types, DOC and see if your DDE settings are like this (these are for Office 2000):

My settings look just like your attachment. Does this mean I can change something to remedy the occurence, or just stop using spaces? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

    Hi Jon:
    Go to Start/Run & type
    regedit

    Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTdoc_auto_fileshellopencommand

& see if the Data value is

    "c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" "%1"

Also, you can try the following, which worked for some people who had this problem with Win95 with WOPR installed.

Instead of the line that you currently have in "Application used to perform action" (that Jefferson posted), try this one & see if it works (you can always change back if it doesn't):

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe" /n "%1""

Let us know if this helps.

Jon--by any chance are you running any additional programs or macro packages with Word? We ran into this problem when using a slightly-outdated version of MacroSuite (by Softwise), a macro product in use by many law firms. A simple (and free) update to the startup templates included with the macro package resolved the problem.

Thanks for your ideas Kevin. I think the problem may be due to spaces in the file name. Stay posted for my feedback. I am using Win 98/ SP 1, <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

I am running WOPR XP, but I didn't notice the problem until I installed SP-1. Maybe one of Woody's experts has a comment about WOPR XP.

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

    Hi Phil,
Before I try this, tell me if there is one too many or one too few quote marks in your string.

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe" /n "%1"" , or do I use no quotes at all in regedit???

    OBTW, I can't find " doc_auto_file " in my registry.

    Thanks,

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

    Hi Phil,

I went to the Windows Explorer, Tools area and found the string in Application used to perform action". Mine says "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10WINWORD.EXE" /n/f/dde. The DDE window says: [REM_DDE_Direct][FileNew("%1")]. I tried putting the /n switch in the DDE statement, but it didn't seem to help. Any ideas??

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

    Hi Jon:
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been away for a week. First, I'm, off a quote mark in the
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTdoc_auto_fileshellopencommand

The Data value I have is
    "c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" "%1"

However, it shows up in the registry as
    ""c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" "%1""

Also, I'm not sure what the /f/dde part is. Just copy it down, so you can always switch back. But I would delete first the dde & try it. If that doesn't work, also take out the f part. You can try it with & without the
    "%1".

Re: Trouble opening word docs (Word XP/SP-1)

I have been having the same problem for the longest time. I have scoured newsgroups for a solution to no avail. All associations are correct per the posts. Winword /r has no effect. It happens anytime I doubleclick: outlook attachment; windows explorer; shotrtcut etc. It opens word but gives file not found, or no message. The second time it works because Word is open. Has nothing to do with spaces in the file name.

Then yesterday I found the problem but not the solution. It is caused by WOPR. If I remove Wopr_ui.dot from the startup folder then I do not have the problem. Word opens every time I doubleclick a file.
Please test yours and let me know.

    Brian,

Your suggestion seems to work. I have also forwarded your "solution" to a WOPR programmer who helped me with a setup problem. I'll let you know what he has to say.

Thanks fo everyone who made suggestions. This venue is simply wonderful for getting help.

If you mean Mike Craven, then I also forwarded it to him!
