    How to create popup info balloon windows (FrontPage 2002 10.2623.2635)

    I don't know what they are called. I only know I want to be able to create them. Just like in all the Windows/Office Help articles - click on a bolded word and a definition or detailed info appears in a balloon or pop-up window without sending the reader to an entirely different page.
    Does anyone know how to create these? I would so much appreciate your help.
    Thank you,
    Kim Mouser

    R. Ivan Linderman had a great page at HTMLchef.com on how to do a "float over" message using the TITLE= attribute. I cannot access the site right now, unfortunately, but I think the trick was to use a SPAN tag around the words that you want associated with the TITLE.

    To have something pop up on a click requires, most likely the use of JavaScript. Search on this board and the HTML/JavaScript/VBScript board for "Javascript source" to get to a huge archive of sample code.

    Balloons and pop-up windows are entirely different animals.

    For balloons and 'tooltips' try Overlib - there some really nifty examples here.

    If you just want a 'quick tip' - like the message you get if you let your mouse hover over this smilie : <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> : then you need to use the ALT tag - the code for this page includes:
    <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    so that the word "smile" pops up.

    If you want simple text to appear on a picture link, edit the picture and enter under 'Alternative representations' the text you want to appear in the 'Text' field.

    If you want a whole new carefully controlled window to open, similar to what you get if you click on <font color=red>HELP</font color=red> at the top of this page, you will probably need a bit of Javascript to set the window size and position. You can force any hyperlink to open a new window by editing it and setting the Target frame to New Window - this would appear in your code something like:
    <a href="NewWindow.htm" target="_blank">

    I thought you just added the title attribute to the tag you wanted the pop up for. I don't believe that SPAN is necessary. The only problem I know of with this method is that only recent browsers recognize the title attribute used this way. On the other hand - only recent browsers will recognize the nifty javascripts over at Overlib. Tks for pointing that one out - Leif!

    You can use SPAN to create a TITLE attribute for an arbitrary selection of text that isn't inside a tag. Something like this:

    This is a test of the SPAN <font color=blue><SPAN TITLE="A tag is a code used in HTML to instruct the browser on how to display text." STYLE="color: purple;"></font color=blue>tag<font color=blue></SPAN></font color=blue>.

    Hovering over "tag" in this example shows the TITLE text in a balloon.

    Yes, thank you very much Leif! This Overlib thing is most like what I'm looking for. Very Cool!

    But there is another style I am even more interested in - that being the style that Microsoft uses in, for instance, MS Access Help. In any area of MS Access - Help, you will see a word or a sentence with a pointer > at the end. When you click on the pointer, a more detailed paragraph drops down and all the text under that moves down to make room. When you click the pointer again, the paragraph slides up and disappears. That's probably VBA, isn't it. I don't know anything about that - yet. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>
    Do you know if that's VB(A) or html or JAVAscript?
    Again, thank you so much for your help - all of you. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    I think I know exactly what you are after. If I'm not mistaken, someone had something like that they were working on last year....

    Was it it you, Jefferson? - I'll keep searching...

    Yes, the code to show and hide the different DIV sections never did work properly in Netscape 4.x, and someone reported that the image did not switch in Netscape 6, but it always works in IE, and maybe for your environment, that's good enough.
