Limiting text form field with lines (Word 97 SR2)

    Hello,

I am trying to create a form in Word. Usually, I can put an underline with the field and continue it with an underlined tab that I run down to give three or four lines (in case they want to print it out and fill it in). But I can't figure out how to get the lines to just fill in when they type and not create new lines. I want to limit the fill in space to the four lines. I know I can limit the number of characters for the field, but this doesn't really get me what I want. I have looked through every bit of form instruction on the web, but I am not finding anything about this.

    Can you help?

    Hi Laura:
I may not understand the question completely. Can't you just select the form field (before it's protected) & press Ctrl+U. This should underline everything that's in the form field, but not create any more lines than is necessary.

    Laura

When I want to set the form up so that the user can optionally fill it out online or print it to complete it, I use table cells to place the form field in.

This allows you to set the cell height to "At least ..." so there is a sufficient gap to the next question/section. If the user wants to write a thesis in the field they can do so online but not in the printed version.

I don't worry about giving blank lines on the print to complete version as the solutions are usually too confusing for people and they reduce legibility.

    Hi Phil,

I knew that this was going to be tricky to explain. What I want is something like three blank lines that people can fill in when they've printed out the form. The trick is, if people fill it out online, then the lines keep jumping so I always have some empty ones. Is there a way to prevent this? Andrew pointed out that he just doesn't put the lines in. I don't know if I have that luxury as I am not the "owner" of the form, but if there's no other way, I will adjust.

    TIA,
    Laura

    Hi Laura:
I'm not sure what you can do. And I'm going to be away for a week, so I won't have a chance to look at it. Sorry.

Is there a way to put a picture/textbox of 3 blank lines "behind" the field so that the field itself behaves normally? I usually only use inline graphics (that is, graphics that do not "float over text") and have never tried anything like that, but it seems in theory that it should be possible.
