Windows Messenger (Windows XP)

I'm running Windows XP and would like to know, how can I remove the Windows Messenger Program from my system? It doesn't show up under Add/Install programs, but it won't go away (very annoying). It keeps asking if I want to update and has 2 windows that pop up on the bottom right screen every time I boot up. Also, is this just a part of Windows XP? It doesn't seem like it was always there.

Any help much appreciated, and if you need more information to know what I'm talking about, please let me know.

    Thanks much!

So you want to completely blow it away, eh....I don't blame you one bit. Click on Start - Run and enter the following line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

That will make it go away, never to be seen again.

As far as the update popups, it's probably the "Automatic Update" feature. You can disable it in the Control Panel - your choices are Never, Notify and Download, and Apply.

Open up my computer, choose tools, and then folder options, then choose to show hidden files and uncheck the box that says hide system files.

Click start, go to find, type "sysoc.inf" and then search for it. Open it up in Notepad and look for the "Components" section of it. Delete the just the word "hide" at the end of the msmsgs string, do not delete the commas!

Save the file, restart, and it should be in the Add and Remove Windows Components section of the add/remove control panel.

BTW: You can do this for the various other apps in the sysoc.inf file as well.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
